Student engagement

Bookvale Public School developed a "Research Team" approach with senior students in which the significant work in establishing the project, working as a team and responding to different client groups are inspired and made visible through the development of websites

We have what's called a student research team and they're the kids in Year 6 who are interested in technology and often they might.sometimes they come in on the weekend, sometimes at lunchtime and they're the kids that lay out the web pages and they're the ones that come up with ideas and some of the things that they've come up with have been just stunning. A "Life on the Goldfields" research project made use of desktop video cameras while Internet research skills were developed as the students pursued information about early Australians from diaries and commentaries of the time.

Last year we dressed up in olden day clothes, for want of a better word, and wrote diaries home from the goldfields and the input was first we got dressed up and took our photographs and imagined that we were writing home, and I think that was quite successful. They were quite keen then to write, maybe because they had a bit of a creative input to start with. (Teacher, Brookvale Public School)

Peer tutoring was used in the Goldfields project to develop skills in using video camera technology.

So one child would take the photo, picks the next child to take the photo who would pick the next child to take the photo. So that information is being passed on from one child to another. (Teacher, Reece High)
